The Haunting of Deck Twelve

Review #1

This episode mainly centered around the character Neelix and the borg children.  For reasons not stated at the beginning of the episode, Voyager flies into a Nebula and cuts all its power so that it is running completely in the dark with only wrist lights and lanterns.  Concerned that the borg children will be frightened or worried when their regeneration cycle is interrupted, Neelix is sent to keep their minds occupied during the operation. At first, he is unsuccessful at capturing their attention with promises of stories and a sing-a-long, but he finally manages to pull them in with a story about deck 12 being haunted.

I really enjoyed this episode mainly because of the format in which it was presented.  Using flashback sequences, Neelix spins a tale of a strange entity that takes over Voyager and tries to kill the crew.  The interaction between Neelix and the borg children, who are a nice combination of adult/child with their borg logic yet immature humanity, was especially well done, I thought.

The only negative thing I would have to say about this episode was that the ending, of course, was predictable.  Other than that, it was a fun episode.

(And yes, there was at least one "Seven, you're with me, " quote from Janeway, so that made it a good one too!)

Review #2

The episode took a very common storyline, but added a new twist. The episode began with Voyager arriving at a nebula and subsequently began a shut down of all systems, including the warp core. It certainly kept the mystery of what was going on from the audience. Neelix gets assigned the job of watching over the Borg children, which would be totally in character for him. I could believe that Naomi wouldn't be there because she was probably with her mom. The poor kid does have a family, ya know. Due to their curiosity of what was going on with the ship, Neelix proceeds to tell the Borg children the story explaining why Voyager was there in the nebula, and why Deck 12 was off limits. On the whole, I thought it was fun to be included in the little campfire ghost storytelling. I felt as if Neelix was telling the story to me.

The episode also made use of the crew as an ensemble. I think we saw everyone contributing, from B'Elanna and Chakotay rescuing Seven, Tuvok and Neelix working(!) together, Harry and Tal roaming
the corridors, to Janeway giving the ultimatum to the lifeform. And I being the avid T/7er was happy to see Torres rescuing Seven, albiet Chakotay had to be there. Darn! However, I did notice, Seven was quite eager to get back to work, helping B'Elanna with repairs. Hmmm.... If I were TPTB, and I wanted people to talk about and be interested in ST Voyager during reruns, I'd inject whole lot of subtext and such to last the summer. I seem to be seeing quite a bit of T/7 subtext. It was nice to see Seven backing up B'Elanna in Engineering in Fury, but I digress.

I wasn't bored for one minute during the episode. It was well paced, and had great quips and one liners, especially between Neelix and Tuvok. Haunting of Deck 12 rates pretty high for me from this season. 4/5 stars
